One of the most important characteristics a friend should have is honesty. The reason for this is the fact that you can trust on him/her and he/she will not lie to you. It is always better for everyone to say the truth, no matter how difficult it is to accept it. Honesty is essential in friendship.
A good friend will understand you and take you for what you really are. A good friend will not try to change you. He/she will understand your mistakes and will accept your apologies. Understanding that the other individual is different is a proof of friendship.
Another characteristic that my best friend should have is to be generous. I don't mean he/she should offer me objects, presents, money, etc. A generous person is the one who stands by you and tries to help you when you have difficulties or offers you advice and support.
